The people who know how to find me know that they can't make me return, and that I won't consent to doing so if they bother anyone who doesn't know of the situation. The people who think they can coerce me and don't care about my willingness can't tell where I've been aside from finding evidence of my passing. So it isn't something I do for my own safety, mostly.

They are. Which is why they know my capabilities well enough to understand they can't force me to return to service. I am not on the run from them so much as "on strike," or perhaps "absent without leave."
